Duck Inn Closing Oct 31st

Tierney's Duck Inn in historic downtown Lake Dallas will close its doors and serve its last customer on Halloween night October 31. The establishment is the oldest restaurant in Denton County.
"It has been very difficult telling our regular patrons that we are leaving," restaurant owner Greg Tierney said. "This establishment carries many fond, emotional memories for thousands of people, including myself."
The original Duck Inn opened in the home of Nellie and Aubrey Howard in 1945. According to Tierney, the couple used a table and four chairs, put a sign in the window that said "Café Open", and The Duck Inn was born. While they have not operated the restaurant in many years, The Duck Inn building is still owned today by members of the Howard family.
According to Tierney, the restaurant's popularity grew in the 60's, 70's and 80's. "Being a popular hangout for local celebrities and politicians it also received notoriety with numerous national celebrities. John Wayne was a regular while filming movies at near-by Cielo Ranch," Tierney said.
"President at the time Jimmy Carter's Mother Lillian, and sister Ruth Carter Stapleton were also regulars when visiting their nearby ranch," Tierney added.
According to Tierney, the restaurant has grown by leaps and bounds over the decades, and has "served millions of diners".
"With the word getting out that we were closing, I think many people assume we already had closed." Tierney said. "With the steep decline in business, we decided to bow out early, but still offer our clientele the opportunity to dine here one last time."
The restaurant will hold a going away celebration on Tuesday, Oct. 30 and the following night the last guest will be served.
